Over at the Scare Me blog we are celebrating this 8th day of the Countdown To Halloween by passing the time with films from one of my all time favorite directors:  Alfred Hitchcock.  Hitchcock actually started in the motion picture business in his native Britain in the early 1920's and completed several silent films, of which the most famous--and most menacing--it The Lodger: A Story Of The London Fog, loosely based the Jack The Ripper killings.  Which is where this still comes from.

Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900)

This is not only the first ever Sherlock Holmes film, it is actually the very first mystery film ever made!  It is a pleasure to be able to post it, since it was considered lost for decades; however, in 1968 a paper print of it was discovered in the Library of Congress.  It as now been fully restored (or as restored as it can be).  The identities of the the two actor playing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson remain unknown.  This was originally shown on Mutoscope machines in penny arcade.

The Exploits Of Elaine Serial: The Clutching Hand (Ep. 1)

This is the first episode in a very early mystery serial dating from 1914 and produced by The Whartons Studios and distributed by Pathe' Exchange (the second of three serials to be made in that arrangement).  This episode is entitled "The Clutching Hand."

An odd little newsreel from 1905.  Newsreels were the "television" of the silent era.
