The Silent Image In Modern Medium: "Uncle Grandpa" and The Funny Face Party

I just happened to be watching a streaming episode of the very quirky and strangely entertaining cartoon Uncle Grandpa yesterday, which features the funny face party of season one.  I immediately thought of  a Georges Melies film of 1901 that goes by several names, the two most famous being The Man With A Rubber Head or The India Rubber Head (L'homme á la téte de caoutchouc) , which had to be both the inspiration for the episode and an out and out homage to the Melies.  Both are hilarious and speak for themselves as imagery.

The Adventures Of Prince Achmed is a German animated feature length fantasy adventure film from 1926; it features black etchings against brilliant hued background!

Mary And Gretel (1916 or 1917)

Here is a fairly short animated fantasy feature from either 1916 or 1917 depending on the source you consult.  This has been described and Alice In Wonderland meet Garden Of Eden; and features, besides the two little girls from the title, a surreal story of a very drunken rabbit and bowling dwarfs!  This was part of a very short lived stop-motion puppet series by animator Howard S. Moss.  It was transferred at 20 frames per second from an original p35 mm print that was in the AFI/James Ashton Collection.

Silly Symphonies; Egyptian Melodies (1931)

Disney animation from the early 30's directed by Wilfred Jackson, who is responsible for two segments of Fantasia (1949), one of which is my favorite, Night On Bald Mountain.

Spooks, Flip The Frog (1932)

Ub Iwerks cartoon from the early 30's after leaving Disney.  He was the original creator of the Skeleton Symphony for Disney, for which he got scant credit.  This is his personal furtherance of that project.  This is for my kid, who is having a whole day of Halloween stuff at his whim today....including going to see Frankenweenie in the theater!  So Happy Halloween to all the little ones out there, and happy animation!!

Dreams Of A Rarebit Fiend: The Pet (1921)

If anyone has been on Google today, then you know that today celebrates the 107th anniversary of cartoonist Winsor McCay's famous Little Nemo In Slumberland; well here is another McCay gem for the Halloween season!
