Here are a couple of stills from D. W. Griffith's 1909 short mystery The Hindoo Dagger. The film was strong on "exotic superstition" and had light flourishes of fantasy. But the notion that an imported dagger from India had mystical influence (whether real or imagined) put the film solidly in the category of a supernatural genre.
