Kalem's 1916 The Black Crook, though not listed in most sources as an "out and out" horror film, is a film with fantastical elements, including The Devil. Directed by Robert Vignola, it stars British born Edward P. Sullivan as "Hertzog" aka "The Black Crook." It's plot featured a deal with the devil, in which Hertzog must deliver one soul to the devil each year, or himself be banished to hell. Stills are a bit hard to come by, but of the handful available, the ones below are the most appropriate for the season. Happy Spooktober!
