Der Golem, or "The Golem," was a German horror film produced and released in 1915, although it is wrongly referred to as the first horror film, obviously with horror films being posted here that go all the way back to the 1890's this cannot be the first horror film; however, it is, or rather was, one of the very first feature length horror films. It is famously lost, actually, partially lost. It's director Paul Wegener, remade the film 5 years later, and that film survives intact. Below are the surviving film fragments from the 1915 version. ReplyDeleteIt is pretty creepy stuff. My understanding is that the remake from 1920, although expanded and longer than the original, is completely faithful to this film.
